A simple progression such as C, Am, F, G stays in one key while moving through different colors. Play each chord slowly, listen to the bass movement, and notice which chord feels like home.
A progression in C major
Try C–Am–F–G. These are the I–vi–IV–V chords in C major: C–E–G, A–C–E, F–A–C, and G–B–D. Each chord uses notes from the same key, so the sequence feels connected.
Play each chord for four beats. The G chord creates tension that resolves when you return to C. That return is one reason progressions can feel like a musical sentence.
Make your own variation
Change the order to Am–F–C–G and notice how the same four chords tell a different story. Then keep the order but change how long you stay on each chord.
